Una bara per lo sceriffo
Directed by Mario Caiano
Synopsis
Shenandoah (Steffen) works his way into a band of highwaymen led by Rojo (Armando Calvo). His initiation consists of hunting down and killing a member of the gang who has 12 bullets while he is only given 2 bullets. When the bandits attempt to rob a wealthy rancher, whom Shenandoah knows, he warns him. The outlaws begin to suspect they were betrayed and commence to rough Shenandoah up. Shenandoah then reveals his true reason for joining the gang; one of them killed his wife and he is there for retribution.

Review by ratbastard ★★★
Spaghetti Western film by Mario Caiano, also known as ‘A Coffin for the Sheriff’ and ‘Una bara per lo Sceriffo’. Drifter / gunslinger ‘Shenandoah’ enters the corrupt town of ‘Richmond’, run by gang leader ‘Lupe Rojo’. Shenandoah soon allies with the vicious gang, though Shenandoah carries a secret - he is actually a US Marshal, seeking revenge. A solid and engaging early Spaghetti Western. Generally well paced and boasting decent performances from Anthony Steffan in the central role, and the great Eduardo Fajardo as ruthless gang member ‘Murdock’. Some of the comedic aspects fall flat, the supporting performances are a mixed bag, and it is generally rough around the edges. The climax is well staged, Shenandoah makes Murdock suffer - before symbolically cleansing himself and relinquishing his badge. Caiano’s filmography is so varied, and perhaps deserves more attention.
Streamed via Prime. Also currently available to stream for free on YouTube.

“A gun is too good for him.”
Lone and Angry Man is an earlier Spaghetti Western starring Anthony Steffen; some of his more known roles of the genre would come a little later. Yet he scarcely starred in a real classic. This early effort however, is really of a higher class and is undoubtedly one of the better Westerns of his. As opposed to his lazy Django imitations, he even looks the part here and for once dons his own styled getup.
The premise follows Shenandoah (Steffen), an unknown who drifts into town for reasons unknown (ironic). However, before too long he is seen riding alongside a dangerous gang of bandits, who threaten the peace within the town. Though unbeknown…

Review by Lewis Nicholls ★★★½
Actually quite a strong little middle ground spaghetti starring Anthony Steffen. Other than being somewhat lacklustre, what lets it down mostly is the inclusion of the side characters of the annoying little old man and lulu belle which do not need to exist in this film in my opinion, and only serve to bring it down in each scene they appear in. Anthony Steffen is cool, the gang is good, and the tension between them is enough to push the film forward, along with good direction from Caiano and a nice little theme song.

A man infiltrates an outlaw gang to learn the truth about a deadly robbery in his past.
Early Spaghetti features a short-haired Anthony Steffen, rock-solid and stoic as usual, on a quest for vengeance against some typically sadistic bandits. The story is very straightforward, and the direction is missing a lot of the flourishes and flair that we'd come to expect with this genre. As such, this plays more like a Hollywood Western that your garden variety amoral & wild Spaghetti affair.
Genre fans will enjoy spotting familiar faces like Frank Brana and Eduardo Fajardo in supporting roles; Fajardo especially shines as the gang's loose cannon killer. The head bandit is played by Armando Calvo, unimpressive in a really bad toupee.…

Once Upon a Time on Letterboxd: A Western Marathon
A simple yet entertaining story, Anthony Steffan is great as always and there’s some good action throughout.

Here we go with Anthony Steffen again. I’m not a fan, but it seems as though Italy had a shortage of action stars. The ones they did have were usually imported, like Lee Van Cleef. Maybe it’s because the action movie industry didn’t really exist there until the sixties.
Luckily, I didn’t mind Steffen here. Maybe because his beard is hiding his creepy face. Actually, I never would have guessed it was him. He looks so different.
Despite all the cold blooded killings, LONE AND ANGRY MAN has an almost pleasant atmosphere, which it turns out I was in the mood for. That’s the funny thing about westerns… it doesn’t matter how many people die, it just seems like a… -

A very below average atypical spaghetti western until an exciting revenge climax that comes out of nowhere and is pretty well executed.

Needing to watch "$1000 on the Black", I picked up the "Wild East" double feature DVD and "Lone and Angry Man" aka "A Coffin for the Sheriff", was the first feature. I'm glad I decided to take the plunge, because this spaghetti western is well made.
It shares the same story as many, many other spaghetti westerns. A stranger named "Shenandoah" walks into a frontier town that is being ruled by a tyrannical leader. He wants to clean it up, and decides the best way to do this, is to join the gang that is wreaking havoc across the frontier. When the syndicate begins to doubt "Shenandoah's" story, the turn on him. Will "Shenandoah" survive the attack...and can the town…

A coffin for the sheriff. No idea what the title refers to, but it sounds good. The film itself, however, is less great. Mediocre is the qualification I would attach to it.
I had seen the film before, but only remembered it being a five out of ten. Why did I watch it again? Who the hell knows. Since the print had not stuck, however, it was like seeing it for the first time.
Lead actor Anthony Steffen does an okay job. He has the right charisma for this kind of tormented role. The man is one of my favorite lumbering actors. He's never really good, but doesn't have to be. He is Anthony Steffen. And that in itself is…
